My CD or DVD Drive
is Not Reading,
Troubleshooting

Cause: If your CD or DVD drive is not reading, the problem could be a dirty lens, the drive may have failed or it could be a loose cable or an improperly configured jumper switch. Read Build a PC to learn what jumpers are and how to configure them.

Solution: First check to see if the CD or DVD drive, shows up in my computer, if its there, then its installed properly. If you have more than one drive, you should see them both. Optical drives do not need to have drivers installed, windows will install it automatically, you just need burning software if its a CD Burner, we like Nero, or DVD playing software, to watch movies, if its a DVD drive, we like PowerDVD.

Next if the drive is showing up properly in my computer, try cleaning it with a CD/DVD cleaning disk, its the same type of disk you would use to clean the DVD player you use to watch movies on your TV. If it still does not work, the drive may have just failed, in witch case the drive will need to be replaced. If you do not see the drive in my computer, open your PC and check to see that the cables are not loose, and the jumpers are configured properly. Get great deals on CD-RW/CD Burners @ Geeks.com!
